If you are looking for a simple and quick Valentine’s Day craft for your kids the Chalk Heart Valentine’s Day Craft for Kids is just for you!
Prep Your Materials
Here is what you will need for this craft:
- Black Paper
- Chalk in Valentine’s Day colors (we used soft chalk pastels)
- Heart template
Making Your Heart Template
First, you will need a heart template to place down on the black paper. The color of paper you use does not matter. We used white because that is what we had the most of. First, I made a template out of white cardstock but I found that it was better to use regular computer paper because less chalk got under the template.
To get a perfect heart, use the trick of folding your paper in half and cutting out half of the heart shape. Once it is totally cut out of the middle, unfold your paper to see the shape of your heart.
If your child can cut, they can easily make their own heart template for this project. My 5 year old has been all about making hearts this way. He even gave me a lesson on how to do it (I didn’t tell him I already knew).
Step One
Tape your heart template in the middle of the black paper. Take the chalk and make small rectangular sections along the outside of the heart.
Tip: To avoid chalky hands, put masking tape around the bottom section of the chalk. It will help prevent one color of chalk from getting on to another.
Continue alternating colors around the outside until you have gone all the way around the heart.
Step Two
Next, carefully put a finger down on one of the chalk areas and push your finger down while pulling the chalk color up. You will probably need to pull the chalk up more than once. Keep going over the same area pulling up until you are happy with how the chalk looks. Be careful to only pull up so that no color gets under the heart template. Work your way around all of the heart.
Step Three
Once the chalk is streaked all the way around the heart, carefully pull the heart template up. Make sure your tape doesn’t rip your paper. And Voila! you are done unless you want to continue to step four.
Step Four – Optional
If you want to take the craft to the next step, you can add an image to the inside of the heart. James made a smaller heart template to go inside the bigger heart. Charlie and Henry made their own crosses for the middle. Repeat the steps above but be careful to not pull the chalk into the chalk of the first heart. Remove your template when the chalk is smeared and see your beautiful creation.
Tip: Spray the page with hairspray to set the picture. It will stop the chalk from smearing.
Have fun experimenting with your own heart designs and see what you and your kiddos can create!
